Artist and Sculptor

Artists Bio
Jan-Hendrik Lötz, also known as JH, grew up in a small town in the countryside in the Western Cape, where creative expression was frowned upon. After school, he moved to Paarl and studied 3D Animation/Design in Cape Town. Between freelance jobs, he learned painting from prolonged library visits, self-experimenting, painting classes with Adèle Fouché and Ryno Swart, and being mentored by Dawid Toua and David Zetler.
He regularly joined figure drawing classes, later leading to figure sculpting workshops with Douglas Gimberg, which he instantly fell in love with. Up untill recently, he has also been working as a beekeeper. After years of self-doubt and being pulled towards the arts over and over again, he is dedicating all his time to his sculptures.

Work in Progress
As a sculptor, I work in clay and cast in bronze. I am drawn to the intrigue of a bewitching subject and the tactile experience of clay. My work explores the human form as subject and vessel, capturing fleeting emotion, subtle gestures, and the quiet complexity of being human. I am often curiously surprised by the small quirks that make each body unique.
